What should I expect in my first class?
Your first class will focus on learning basic techniques in a supportive environment. Don't worry about being perfect—everyone starts somewhere, and instructors will help you learn proper form and movements at your own pace.
Do I need any prior experience?
No experience is necessary. Our combat gym welcomes beginners and offers training for all skill levels, from complete newcomers to advanced practitioners.
Even the most experienced practitioners are humbled by combat sports, As Jedi Master Qui-Gon Jinn says, "There's always a bigger fish".
What should I wear and bring?
Bring a water bottle and wear comfortable athletic clothing that allows you to move freely.
We are unique in that we provide equipment for beginners to try out, but you may eventually want to invest in hand wraps, gloves, and other appropriate protective wear depending on the direction of your combat journey.
Will I get hurt or have to fight?
Beginners start with technique training, pad work, and conditioning.
Our beginner friendly classes are designed to be minimal risk.
In any MMA gym injuries are most likely to occur in 'Sparring' in striking and 'Rolling' in Jiu Jitsu. To ensure safety and quality training, sparring and rolling are not permitted for beginners.
Our coaches strongly recommend listening to your body and building progression safely. eve
How long does it take to feel coordinated?
It's normal to feel uncoordinated at first when learning new movements and combinations.
Progression varies from person to person. Typically, those who have previously engaged in other sports may find that their agility and fitness levels transfer well to our training.
Give yourself at least 3 weeks of classes to start feeling more comfortable—consistency and practice are key.
When is the right time to ask my coach questions about my progress?
Questions that require your coach to focus on your individual progress are best presented when your coach isn't teaching a class with many other students. It is best to wait until after class to get a proper answer from your coach. If you are wanting progress faster, this is where one-on-one training can be beneficial.
Most of our coaches offer flexible one-on-one training sessions, allowing you to train at convenient times and maximise your progress, See Powerstrike Customised Coaching.
What if I'm not in great shape?
That's okay! Combat training will improve your fitness over time.
Focus on consistency, good form, and building your base fitness level gradually.
You’re advised to maintain your fitness and physical readiness for combat classes.
If you're unsure about your capabilities, stick to beginner-friendly classes (Look for the beginner-friendly symbol on the timetable) and speak one-on-one with your coach to ensure you're training safely.
On the timetable, a 100% battery symbol indicates high-intensity sessions—these are best avoided until you’ve built the fitness to match the demands.
Is the gym environment friendly?
Yes! Rings MMA is not just a place to learn martial arts, but also where you'll likely meet great training partners and friends.
Respect your training partners and they'll do the same for you.
Some classes are better for people looking to zone in and focus on their martial arts progression, whereas others are appropriate for a more friendly supportive and social approach.
On the timetable you'll see the beginner friendly symbol, this means the coach is there to ensure beginners find their path.
